Eperosa Stonegarden 1858 Grenache 2020

Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front. Posted on 23 August 2022.

It’s not actually labelled as grenache but it is that, with minor additions of 3% mataro and 2% shiraz. The vineyard, at Springton, was planted in 1858. I mean, 1858. Wow. Rarely, when I’m at the tasting table, am I so tempted to just call the day off and start hooking into the wine in front of me. This is just so more-ish in the most compelling of ways. The lightness of touch combined with the insistence of tannin here is elite. I have it in my mind that McLaren Vale streets the Barossa on the grenache front but this wine and others in the Eperosa range tell me that I’m wrong. Raspberry, earth and leather, anise and fragrant herbs; this list of flavours does not do the wine justice. This is a wine of structure and shape as much as anything. It’s terrific.
