The Magnolia Road Vineyard, Vine Vale Semillon is from two separate plantings – 1941 (90%), 1971 (10%). The 2 blocks lie between 315-330 metres above sea level and the vineyard run organically with the use of sheep to graze through winter. The vines grow in deep sands at the foot of Mengler's Hill derived from the granitic parent rock sitting in the gullies above. The fruit was handpicked over four separate days, barrel fermented and aged in French oak for 20 months.
The Magnolia Semillon has a classic thread of characters that show in each vintage. Beautiful lemon, lemon rind and grapefruit aromas are balanced by subtle oyster shell and saline notes giving a line of minerality and vitality to the wine. The complexity of the wine is portrayed in its aroma with each smell revealing further layers and nuances.
The palate is full from the outset bursting with lemony freshness yet so wonderfully balanced with soft acid and that natural mineral and oyster shell line that the deep granitic sands of Magnolia are so wonderful at delivering. The palate is full from start to a near endless finish with lingering citrus notes that beg for fresh oysters.
